Date of Funeral
JANSSON, John Ewen
1 September 1948 – 25 May 2025
Passed away peacefully at Melaleuca, aged 76, after a period of declining health with Parkinson’s disease.
Beloved brother of Raymond and long-time companion of Marion. Son of Helen and Frank (both dec). A proud fourth-generation Phillip Islander, John was a quiet achiever whose intellect, integrity, and deep love for his community defined a life of purpose and contribution.
A civil engineer by profession, John was also a skilled boat builder, author, and respected historian. His tireless work in preserving the maritime and local history of Phillip Island leaves a lasting legacy in the form of books, photographs, historical records, and genealogical research.
John will be deeply missed by family, friends, and the many community organisations he served over a lifetime.
JANSSON, John Ewen
1 September 1948 – 25 May 2025
Passed away peacefully at Melaleuca, aged 76, after a brave journey with Parkinson’s disease.
Dearly loved and loving brother of Raymond, and much loved brother-in-law of Pam. A quiet, gentle soul who lived a life of curiosity, creativity, and immense contribution.
John was a man of remarkable intellect and unwavering humility - a civil engineer, historian, boat builder, researcher, and treasured member of the Phillip Island community. His legacy lives on in the stories he preserved, the boats he built, and the hearts of those who knew him.
The island has lost an icon.
We will miss him deeply, but we are grateful for every moment shared.
Ray and Pam

May 26, 2025 at 2:26 pmJANSSON, JOHN.
Vale John. You were the first person to welcome my parents and me, when we bought our land in Jansson Road in 1966. I shall miss your quiet presence as we just sat and enjoyed a cuppa, not needing to talk much. However, when you did, I could listen for ages to the stories you could tell about Island history, couta boats, and the maritime history of Westernport Bay. The Island has lost a fine, and gentle man.

May 27, 2025 at 8:28 pmGreat memories of sharing time at Franklyn Street.
4 o’clock afternoon tea/coffee and nibbles, impromptu dinners in front of a roaring fire with plentiful fire wood and from time to time, sorting those frustrating laptop issues.
Conversations of valuable local history shared, stories of the past and sometimes a quiet nap in front of the TV. John will be missed greatly on many levels throughout his beloved island community.
We are blessed to have crossed his path let alone share so many memories.
Our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. He was one of a kind.

June 3, 2025 at 3:54 pmThank you for the live streaming of John’s funeral service today. A very special service acknowledging all of John’s gifts. Thinking of John’s family today.
Our family will always remember John and appreciate his wonderful knowledge of the Island’s history, past and present, his chats whenever we met, his kindness with sharing his photos, his quiet arrival at our caravan door in Reid Street and the friendship he had with our Dad, Allan Coker (nephew of Charlie, Josie and Ted Richardson) over many years in the mid ’60s to ’70s.
The Richardson and Jansson friendship has been valued by all connected to the families, and we are thankful for this ongoing Phillip Island connection.
